Anita Mahar is a dedicated Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with a passion for guiding individuals toward positive change and self-discovery. Anita holds an MSW from Yeshiva University (2015) and is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
Anita utilizes an integrative, solution-focused and goal-oriented approach tailored to individual needs. Her practice is founded on Family Systems Theory and Psychodynamic concepts, recognizing the profound impact of relationships and past experiences on current well-being. She also incorporates frameworks such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the Kübler-Ross Model to support growth and transition. Anita has specialized training in treating substance use disorders, anger management, and depressive disorders, with a strong focus on addressing relationship trauma and the effects of structural discrimination. She has also served as a therapist, seeing individual clients across various settings.
Her commitment to community mental health began during the COVID-19 pandemic when she started working with the non-profit Black Men Heal (BMH), providing free therapy to Black men. She is currently connecting BMH's web-based services to physical spaces to expand community mental health access.
Anita is also certified to supervise graduate interns, demonstrating her dedication to shaping the next generation of clinical social workers. She is enthusiastic about meeting new clients and committed to supporting you on your journey toward self-love and healing.
Anita currently accepts clients with Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield and on a private pay basis. Updates will be posted on our website as he becomes credentialed with additional insurance companies. A sliding scale is available for those who may have difficulty paying out-of-pocket. Payment is due at the time of service.
Please note: Anita is currently available for in-person or telehealth appointments on Mondays, 1 pm to 4 pm; Tuesdays, 1 pm to 4 pm; and Fridays, 9 am to 4 pm. Please contact Anita to confirm her exact availability.
