Greg Smith, LMSW
Therapist
Greg’s approach to therapy is person-centered and eclectic, incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and related evidence-based methods as foundational elements. He works with clients to understand the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, interplay between emotions, actions and behaviors, and thoughts. This practice can assist in making small, medium, and large changes in thinking, actions, and behavior, which ultimately circle back and can provide a positive impact on emotions and interpersonal relationships.
He has experience working with neurodivergent individuals (autistic and ADHD, whether diagnosed and/or identifying as), older individuals, and elders, and is also interested in helping people experiencing anxiety related to climate change.
Greg is a proponent of the healing properties of being in nature (such as forest bathing and being near bodies of water), physical movement and/or exercise (activities you enjoy), and mindfulness and meditation. All of these have been proven by research to reduce anxiety and depression, improve mood and mental well-being, and can be used as a preventative, during, and/or after stressful life events, big or small.
Philosophically, he finds Carl Rogers’ person-centered psychotherapy approach and its tenet of respect for the innate value of each person an important psychotherapeutic concept. He is also influenced by the philosophy of Deep Green Ecology, which states that all things in nature (humans, animals, plants, rocks, rivers, mountains, and much more) deserve respect as part of the larger ecological community of planet Earth and that we are connected to all things. This is especially important regarding the people in our lives who can be a source of strength and support.
Greg currently accepts clients with Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield and on a private pay basis. Updates will be posted on our website as he becomes credentialed with additional insurance companies. A sliding scale is available for those who may have difficulty paying out-of-pocket. Payment is due at the time of service.
